2023 Season Highlights

Take a look back at some of the highlights from the 2023 season!

Waterski Judges Training

A group of eight people came together in late February at the Town Loch National Training Site for two days of training in Three Event Waterski Judging. Since the course, the attendees have been developing their skills at events throughout the year, and Chris Heron and Tegan Brady have qualified as J3 Judges.

Online Disability Inclusion Training

We were delighted to work with Access Adventures to deliver Online Disability Inclusion Training for clubs and sites nationwide. This training helped support sites be more inclusive, providing them with more information about disability awareness, adaptive equipment, and participant assessments. We thank Jane and Claire from Access Adventures for delivering the session and Scottish Disability Sport for their input.

BWSW Level 1 Coaching Course

Ahead of the season, on a chilly weekend in March, the Town Loch National Training Site played host to the first BWSW Coaching Course to be delivered in Scotland for several years. Thanks to Matt Crowhurst for delivering the course, and congratulations to the six candidates on their successful completion of the course.

Glenn Campbell Coaching Clinic @ Town Loch

We were delighted to welcome Glenn Campbell back to the Town Loch National Training Site to deliver a subsidised Coaching Clinic to skiers from clubs across Scotland. Over the course of the day, 15 skiers were able to get input into their skiing and things to work on from Glenn.

Friends of Tournament Development Day

The following day, Glenn was joined by Dusko Lukic for the Scottish Friends of Tournament Development Day. Development Days support skiers under the age of 18 who have an interest in improving their skills and progressing towards competition. Friends of Tournament, linked to the British Tournament Water Ski Committee, raises funds to assist elite skiers and support the continued development of competitive waterskiing.

Coaching Clinic @ Aboyne

WWS Development Coach (Ali Brotherton) and Town Loch National Training Site Head Coach (Chris Heron) visited Aberdeen Waterski and Wakeboard Club to host a Coaching Clinic for their members. It was a jam-packed day, with members receiving coaching ranging from trick skiing on two skis to short line slalom and back rolls on a wakeboard.

Trick Ski Clinics & Competition

Thanks to the support of Friends of Tournament, we were able to host two free Trick Ski Clinics at the Town Loch National Training Site, which supported the introduction of Trick Ski Competitions at the Town Loch stops of the Scottish Backyard Slalom Series. Well done to all who took part, and we look forward to building on this at next year's events.

Loch Stock Wakesurf Event

After the successful return of Loch Stock during the 2022 season, it was great to return to Loch Lomond Wakeboard in Ardlui for the 2023 Loch Stock event. This year, the event focused on wake surfing with lots of practice and coaching sets on Saturday and the competition on Sunday. Congratulations to everyone who took part, particularly those who made it onto the podium.

Scottish Open Cable Wakeboard Championships @ Foxlake’s JibFest

This year, Foxlake Adventures in Dunbar, in partnership with Edinburgh-based ticketing company Citizen Ticket, launched their new event concept, JibFest. We were delighted to award the event the inaugural Scottish Cable Wakeboard Open Championships. After intense competition and some epic riding, our Scottish Champions were eventually crowned – congratulations to them all.

Loch Earn Wake School Event

On the same weekend, Loch Earn Wake School hosted a fun-focused event featuring everything from SUP races and a bellyflop competition to wake surf coaching sets and a wakeboarding competition. All accompanied by an all-day BBQ and the sounds of a DJ.

Scottish Backyard Slalom Series

The Scottish Backyard Slalom Series returned for a second season and saw events at the Town Loch National Training Site and Kyle Waterski & Wakeboard Club. The Backyard Slalom Series focuses on bringing together the waterski community with some light-hearted competition thrown in for good measure and is a great way for everyone to take part. Congratulations to everyone who took part, and a big shout out to all the young and developing skiers who dominated the backyard scoring this season.

Glasgow Wake Park Open

The season came to a close with a jam-style big-air event at Glasgow Wake Park. The event, a new format for this season, saw higher-than-expected entries despite the time of year and weather. The event's format lent itself to competitors pushing their own boundaries, with many trying and landing new tricks for the first time. Congratulations to everyone who took part!
